The Sanilac Township water system operates on quality water provided by the Village Of Lexington. Please note that Sanilac Township handles all aspects of customer service which include billing, inquiries, complaints, service requests and work orders. All requests must come through the Sanilac Township office. The Village of Lexington Water Operators handle operations in the field, monitor pump station, read meters and handle turn on/offs in the distribution system upon receiving a work order from Sanilac Township. Only Village of Lexington Water Operators are authorized to access the curb stop.
The owner of the premises where a meter is installed will be held responsible for its care and protection from freezing and from injury or interference by any person or persons. In case injury to the meter or in case of stoppage or imperfect operation, the owner of the premises shall give immediate notice to the Sanilac Township office. All water furnished by the Township of Sanilac and used on any premises must pass through the meter. No bypass or connection around the meter will be permitted. If any meter gets out of order or fails to register, the owner will be charged at the average quarterly consumption rate as shown by the meter over the period of the receding four quarters, when the meter was accurately registering.
If you will be leaving your residence for any length of time, especially in the winter, please schedule an appointment to have your water turned off at the curb stop. Further, take steps to winterize your home by properly draining the pipes to prevent them from freezing and breaking. We do not recommend disconnecting or removing your water meter. This can cause the meter to malfunction and have inaccurate readings if not correctly reconnected. “There is no charge for having the water turned on or off’. This only requires a work order from Sanilac Township so that the Lexington Water Operators can take care of the request. If the meter freezes and breaks it will need to be replaced and the replacement cost is 100 % the homeowner’s responsibility. If a water line freezes and breaks the homeowner is also responsible for the cost of the leaked water. This is just a friendly reminder to try and prevent damage to your water system, home and to avoid interruptions to your water service.
Please update any contact information/telephone numbers that have changed. We also ask that if you have a valid email address that you provide us with the same as another form of contact. In the case of an emergency or interruption of service it is important we have proper contact information for each and every residence in the system.
At the time that a residence changes ownership or tenancy, the seller or current tenant should call the Sanilac Township Offices at (810) 622-8178, Ext 2 or Ext 3 to schedule a final reading. Please call two to three business days prior to the desired date of reading. The final bill will be mailed or emailed approximately 7 business days from the final reading. We also ask that you provide us information for the person and/or persons purchasing your home so that the water account can be transferred out of your name and into the new owners. This prevents you from being charged for services for a residence you no longer own.

Water bills are calculated and sent quarterly. We now offer paperless billing via email rather than through the U.S. Mail. To sign up for paperless billing, please call or email either the township clerk or treasurer and provide your water account number and email address.
Place bill and payment in the drop box located by the front door of the Township Offices.
Failure to receive a bill does not relieve a customer of any payment obligations or late charges. A 10% late fee will be added to all accounts that are not received by the due date. Bills stay with the homeowner.
Water shut offs will take place for any account with an outstanding balance. To avoid service interruption, make sure your bill is paid in full on the due date. Once service interruption has taken place, the entire balance including all fees must be paid before service will be restored.
If your bill seems high or you are flagged for high usage please check for leaks; such as dripping faucet, running toilet, or other unsuspected leaks that may be the cause of high usage.
